Here’s a recap of Dan Campbell’s postgame press conference after the Lions beat the Indianapolis Colts 24-6, improving their record to 10-1 this season.
Opening Statement:
“Good win. That’s 10 for us. We came in and did what needed to be done. I thought the Colts fought hard, and credit to Shane Steichen and Gus Bradley for their efforts. Their defense was tough and stayed in it until the end. I’d like to highlight our defense – it’s been 10 quarters without allowing a touchdown.
Over the last three games, we’ve shut down the run and limited points. We knew Jonathan Taylor would be a focus, and we managed to contain him and minimize quarterback runs. Offensively, we got ahead early with two scoring drives and maintained control. Field position played a huge role, and Jack Fox delivered an outstanding performance pinning them deep multiple times. Overall, it was a great team effort. Now we prepare for a short week against Chicago.”
On the Defense’s Success in the Red Zone:
“Good red zone offenses can run the ball, and we shut that down. Aaron Glenn and the coaching staff do a great job with detailed game plans, and our players execute them. We emphasize stopping the run and preventing points, which is part of our DNA. Our red zone defense reflects this mentality, and our guys are applying pressure and taking it to heart.”
On Containing Anthony Richardson’s Running Game:
“There’s nothing easy about stopping a quarterback like Richardson. Early on, we had some misfits in run assignments, which led to explosive plays. Once we calmed down and adjusted, we handled our responsibilities. With Taylor and Richardson’s dual-threat capabilities, it was a tough challenge, but our defense rose to the occasion. They did what was needed, and I’m proud of their effort.”
On Defensive Performance Despite Injuries:
“It starts with Aaron Glenn, the coaching staff, and the players understanding our identity and winning formula. We take the ‘next man up’ approach seriously, giving everyone real reps in practice. Complementary football has been key for us, with different units stepping up when needed. Our players are gritty, smart, and committed to giving their all, which keeps us competitive despite injuries.”
On Depth Being Tested During a Short Week:
“We’ll see how injuries play out. Kalif Raymond’s situation is more serious, but it’s unclear if anyone will be ready by Thursday. Every team deals with injuries, and the league’s schedule doesn’t wait. We’ll be ready for Chicago on Thanksgiving and focus on preparing for Green Bay next. That’s just how it works.”
On Running the Ball on Third Downs:
“Ben Johnson deserves credit for analyzing what gives us the best chance to succeed. It’s part of our mentality here – if we believe in a play, we’ll go for it, even on third-and-seven or third-and-eight. It’s become a changeup for us, and it’s paying off.”
On Starting 10-1 for the First Time in 90 Years:
“We’re focused on the present, but the road wins stand out. I was reminded of 2022 when we were 0-11-1 on the road. Now we’re 16-5 since then, and that speaks to the group in the locker room. Winning on the road shows we’re a good team, but we’re not dwelling on it. This week is huge – a division opponent like Chicago, with Minnesota and Green Bay still in the mix, makes every game critical.”
On Jahmyr Gibbs’ Performance Without David Montgomery:
“I had no doubts about Gibbs stepping up. He handled the load well and fought for tough yards. It’s no surprise to me – he’s capable of taking on the responsibility, just like David. It was great to see him rise to the occasion”
