“Detroit is absolutely the best spot,” Payton wrote, emphasizing the wealth of coaching talent and mentorship available in Detroit. From head coach Dan Campbell to offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell, and even Goff himself, Jones could benefit from the Lions’ culture and development-focused system.
“This is a good guy that has simply been in the wrong place,” Payton added, referencing Jones’ professionalism despite challenges in New York.
A Backup Role with Potential
Jones, with his 2,070 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 10 games this season, could serve as a reliable contingency plan for the Lions. Payton pointed out the importance of having a solid backup quarterback, especially for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
“Hendon Hooker isn’t ready for this yet,” Payton noted. “The Lions know that he’s not ready.” Jones could step into that gap, ensuring the Lions maintain stability if the unexpected happens.
Brad Berreman of SideLion Report echoed Payton’s sentiments, calling Detroit the “ideal fit” for Jones. “The Lions look like the most ideal fit for him, offering a chance to develop in an offensive system where he can learn and grow,” Berreman wrote.
Not Everyone Is Convinced
Despite the support for Jones joining Detroit, some experts remain skeptical. Mark Powell of FanSided argued that the Lions have no real need for Jones, stating, “I don’t see a path to playing time in the Motor City for Jones, something he wants from the jump.”
Powell’s concerns highlight the delicate balance the Lions must consider: acquiring depth without disrupting the harmony of their team or the aspirations of a quarterback looking for playing time.
