If Aaron Glenn departs as the Lions’ defensive coordinator to take a head coaching job at the end of the season, here are four potential candidates to replace him.
As the 2025 coaching cycle approaches, both of Detroit’s coordinators are becoming prominent head coaching prospects, with Glenn likely the more probable of the two to leave for a head coaching opportunity. His work with a Lions defense that has been consistently hit by injuries this year has certainly enhanced his chances of moving up the coaching ranks. While Glenn will likely have several offers, he is expected to be selective in his decision, especially considering the success he’s found in Detroit.
Head coach Dan Campbell, aware of the possibility of losing key members of his coaching staff, has been preparing for the potential departure of Glenn, just as he has with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Campbell has made several staff adjustments since taking over in Detroit, and it’s reasonable to assume he is already contemplating possible replacements for Glenn, should he take another job.
Given the strong team chemistry and coaching foundation in place, the Lions aren’t expected to be caught off guard if Glenn leaves. With open communication about potential opportunities, Detroit would likely be able to quickly fill the defensive coordinator role if needed. In the event Glenn moves on, here are four candidates who could step in as his successor.
