The Detroit Lions had a significant gap to fill on their offensive line during the offseason after the departure of guard Jonah Jackson, who had struggled significantly since signing with the Los Angeles Rams. Jackson’s departure left the Lions in need of a reliable replacement, and they found one in veteran guard Kevin Zeitler.

Zeitler has excelled in his first season with Detroit, impressing with strong Pro Football Focus grades. His performance includes an 89.3 run-blocking grade and a solid 78.0 in pass protection, with only three sacks allowed and 11 pressures. His effective play has made him a key asset for the Lions’ offensive line.

With Zeitler playing at a high level, the Lions will likely try to bring him back for the 2025 season. However, with free agency looming, there’s no guarantee he will remain in Detroit, which has led to speculation about his future.

According to Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine, Zeitler could potentially join the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs are facing issues with their offensive line, especially after relying on raw, young linemen like Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris at left tackle. These struggles led the Chiefs to sign veteran D.J. Humphries in the hope that his experience would stabilize the position.

The Chiefs also face the possibility of losing Trey Smith, a starting guard, to free agency in 2025. With Smith likely seeking a lucrative contract, the Chiefs may be forced to find a replacement. Zeitler could be the ideal fit, offering immediate help with his proven ability to perform at a high level.

Despite Zeitler’s strong fit in Kansas City, the Chiefs face competition in acquiring him. The Lions, with significantly more cap space in 2025, will likely try to retain him. Other NFL teams will also be in the running for his services, making it a competitive market for the veteran guard.

The Chiefs are projected to have $21.8 million in cap space next offseason, while the Lions are expected to have $62 million. While Zeitler would provide a solid bridge for Kansas City’s offensive line, it may be challenging for the Chiefs to secure his services with so many teams interested in him.
