The Detroit Lions lost defensive star Aidan Hutchinson back in Week 6 when he broke his leg. Initial reports suggested he would miss the rest of the season and postseason, though some speculated he might return for a potential Lions Super Bowl.
During Sunday’s “Fox NFL Sunday” pregame show, Glazer provided an encouraging update on Hutchinson’s recovery.
“Here’s where he is: He’s actually doing some underwater running on an underwater treadmill,” Glazer said. “He’s able to walk on land, as they say. He’s supposed to use a cane, but he’s not really using it right now.
They are holding out hope—just because of how hard he works—that he could possibly be back, not (for) the Super Bowl, but (for) the NFC Championship Game, depending on how that bone feels, and Dan Campbell says also (it depends) on how much practice he can get.”
Before his injury, Hutchinson was a strong contender for Defensive Player of the Year, recording 7.5 sacks, 17 quarterback hits, and 45 pressures in five games. Despite missing time, his pressure total still ranks in the NFL’s top 15 heading into Week 14.
The Lions have thrived in Hutchinson’s absence, with their defense allowing the second-fewest points per game (18.0) through 13 games. However, injuries have mounted, and the pass rush has been inconsistent without Hutchinson.
The team has adapted by increasing their blitz rate and trading for Za’Darius Smith, but Hutchinson’s return could provide a huge boost during a playoff run.
Let’s hope Glazer’s report reflects a genuine possibility rather than overly optimistic speculation.
