A new offseason projection suggests the Detroit Lions may lose a key starter.
The Lions recently secured their 11th consecutive win, improving to an impressive 12-1 for the season. As Super Bowl favorites, they’ve dominated the NFL and remain laser-focused on postseason success with just four weeks left in the regular season.
While Detroit is fully committed to the present, fans and teams across the league are already speculating about offseason moves. Bleacher Report recently highlighted each team’s needs and potential free agency strategies. For the Kansas City Chiefs, they identified Lions’ guard Kevin Zeitler as a possible target.
“With Trey Smith nearing free agency, the Chiefs may need to find a veteran replacement if he departs for a lucrative deal. Kevin Zeitler, who has excelled this season in Detroit, would be an ideal fit. The 34-year-old has played at an elite level all year,” stated Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department.
The Chiefs’ interest is understandable. Despite their 11-1 record, their offensive line has struggled to protect Patrick Mahomes. Zeitler, meanwhile, has had a career-best season at age 34, solidifying himself as one of the league’s top interior linemen.
Zeitler, a first-time Pro Bowler last year with the Baltimore Ravens, has elevated his performance this season. He is currently ranked by PFF as the second-best guard in the league, earning a remarkable 90.0 overall grade and an 88.5 run-blocking grade.
Given his standout season, Zeitler is likely to attract significant attention in free agency. The Lions may regret signing the veteran to only a one-year deal during the 2024 offseason.
If Zeitler departs, Detroit may need to reshuffle its offensive line. Graham Glasgow could return to right guard, while Jonah Jackson resumes his left guard role. Alternatively, the Lions might give 2024 draft pick Christian Mahogany a chance.
Although replacing Zeitler’s veteran leadership will be challenging, head coach Dan Campbell and his staff have consistently proven their ability to adapt. Any offseason departures will be met with resilience and determination.
