A recent report sheds light on the two key factors that could influence Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson’s decision to leave for a head coaching role with teams such as the Chicago Bears, New York Jets, or New Orleans Saints.

The Lions’ rise to prominence has been a gradual process, beginning with a disappointing 3-13 record in 2021. Since then, the team has emerged as one of the NFL’s top contenders. As of Week 15 in 2024, the Lions are tied for the best record in the league at 12-1, with much of the credit going to head coach Dan Campbell and his staff. Among those who have contributed to Detroit’s success, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson stands out, having transformed quarterback Jared Goff into an MVP candidate and leading the league’s top-ranked offense.

Given Johnson’s significant role in the team’s success, it’s no surprise he has been a hot commodity in head coach searches over the last couple of years. Despite the interest, Johnson has been deliberate in considering his next move. As the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the NFL, he doesn’t feel the need to rush into a head coaching position.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer, it was revealed that Johnson is approaching this year’s coaching cycle with a more thoughtful strategy. He won’t be chasing interviews, and any discussions he takes will be driven by a genuine interest in the team and the opportunity, not just the position itself. Johnson has two primary criteria for considering a job: alignment with the organization’s vision and a recognition of past mistakes, coupled with a willingness to address and correct them. He aims to gauge whether a team is ready to fully support his vision for success.

As the New York Jets, Chicago Bears, and New Orleans Saints look for new head coaches, and the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders could potentially join the list, the Bears might be the most attractive option. The team boasts a solid roster and a promising young quarterback in Caleb Williams, which could appeal to Johnson’s coaching aspirations.
