Levi Onwuzurike, a defensive lineman for the Detroit Lions, has shown significant improvement in 2024 after struggling in his first three years. Once a second-round pick, Onwuzurike has been seeing more playing time this season and is posting career highs in sacks (1.5) and pressures (29) across 12 games. His overall performance has been much stronger in his fourth year, suggesting he has finally turned a corner in his development.

Onwuzurike is currently in the final year of his rookie contract, which is worth $8.1 million. Though he is dealing with a minor injury, it is not expected to be serious, and if he can recover and finish the season on a high note, Onwuzurike could position himself for a lucrative contract in 2025.

Windy City Gridiron’s Jacob Infante recently suggested the Chicago Bears should sign Onwuzurike to a two-year, $9 million contract in the upcoming 2025 free agency. Infante also recommended the Bears target wide receiver Tim Patrick and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley to strengthen their roster. The three players would bring valuable experience and continuity, having worked under the same coaching staff in Detroit.

In addition to his pass-rushing ability, Onwuzurike offers versatility with his ability to play both inside and outside on the defensive line. His skills could significantly help the Bears’ struggling run defense, which ranks 26th in the league, providing an immediate boost to their defensive front.

Infante also proposed the Bears poach coaching talent from the Lions, suggesting that offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, offensive line coach Hank Fraley, and defensive line coach Terrell Williams should all be hired by Chicago. This strategy would bolster the Bears’ coaching staff with experienced individuals who have contributed to Detroit’s recent success.

Lions fans are already concerned about losing multiple coaches after their team’s strong performances in recent years, making the prospect of losing Johnson and others to a division rival particularly difficult to accept. However, with the Bears looking to make major changes in the offseason, it’s possible they could convince these coaches to move to Chicago.

The Lions, however, may not be willing to match a large offer for Onwuzurike. With several key players already under contract on their defensive line, including Alim McNeill and D.J. Reader, Detroit might not be able to provide Onwuzurike the starting role he may seek. If Onwuzurike is looking for a starting position, the Bears could be a strong contender for his services in 2025.
