Holder emphasized the importance of adding “another big-bodied option on the interior” following injuries to D.J. Reader and Alim McNeil, especially with the postseason fast approaching.
While Purcell may not be a high-profile acquisition, his credentials make him worth considering. The 33-year-old has proven himself in the NFL, with 45 starts and 90 total appearances since entering the league in 2014.
His varied roles—from practice squad member to primary starter—highlight his adaptability and willingness to contribute in any capacity.
Purcell has remained effective despite being cut by the New England Patriots this preseason. In 2022, he achieved a career-high 1.5 sacks, four quarterback hits, and the second-most tackles (45) of his career.
In 2023, he followed up with five QB hits and three pass breakups, a career-best, demonstrating his ability to impact games even at this stage of his career.
At 6-foot-3 and nearly 330 pounds, Purcell is a reliable gap-filler who could bolster Detroit’s defensive line if further injuries arise.
