The Detroit Lions are heading into their highly anticipated game against the Buffalo Bills in relatively good health, with several key players expected to return after missing time due to injury. Offensive tackle Taylor Decker and defensive linemen DJ Reader, Levi Onwuzurike, and Josh Paschal, all of whom were sidelined last week, appear set to play on Sunday. Additionally, defensive tackle Alim McNeill has cleared concussion protocol and is no longer listed on the injury report.
However, the Lions did rule out linebacker Trevor Nowaske for the upcoming game. Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed that Nowaske would not be able to clear the concussion protocol in time to play. Nowaske, who was initially not listed on the injury report Wednesday, did not participate in Thursday’s practice, prompting the team to officially rule him out.
Campbell acknowledged that Nowaske’s concussion came as a surprise. The coach stated that the linebacker had been feeling unwell, which led to his placement in the protocol. “That crept up on us,” Campbell said, adding that Nowaske would be fine in the long run but was unavailable for this week’s game.
Nowaske has been a valuable asset for the Lions’ linebacker rotation this season, especially given the team’s struggles with injuries at the position. With regulars like Alex Anzalone, Derrick Barnes, and Malcolm Rodriguez all on injured reserve, Nowaske’s increased role has been crucial for Detroit’s defensive depth.
So far this season, Nowaske has accumulated 17 total tackles, including 11 solo stops. He has also contributed two sacks and an interception, which came in the Lions’ win over the Tennessee Titans. His versatility and ability to step up in the absence of other linebackers has made him an important contributor to the defense.
With Nowaske unavailable, the Lions may turn to a mix of new additions and remaining players to fill the gap. Linebackers Kwon Alexander and Jamal Adams, as well as special teams contributor Ezekiel Turner, could see an uptick in playing time. Alongside rookie starter Jack Campbell, these players will be tasked with helping to fill the void left by Nowaske’s absence.
Despite the setback with Nowaske’s injury, the Lions are optimistic that their defense can continue to perform at a high level. With key players returning to the lineup and others stepping up, they’ll look to stay competitive against the Bills in what many are calling a potential Super Bowl preview.
