The Detroit Lions endured multiple injury setbacks during their Week 15 high-scoring game against the Buffalo Bills, with one of the most significant being the loss of star running back David Montgomery, who tore his MCL.
While head coach Dan Campbell had announced that Montgomery would be out for the remainder of the season, the running back himself suggested that his return isn’t entirely off the table. Speaking at a charity coat drive in Detroit, Montgomery told team reporter Dannie Rogers that he was not placed on injured reserve on Tuesday, implying that his situation could evolve.
When asked about the possibility of playing again in 2024, Montgomery expressed hope, stating, “I hope so.”
Montgomery has been a key part of the Lions’ dynamic backfield alongside Jahmyr Gibbs, helping the team maintain one of the NFL’s top rushing offenses. This season, the 27-year-old has accumulated 775 rushing yards on 4.2 yards per carry and scored 12 rushing touchdowns, bringing his total to 25 touchdowns over the last two years.
Although there has been no official word on whether Montgomery might return this year, he remains optimistic and is not ready to completely rule out the possibility.
