Despite an impressive season, Lions fans are worried after the Week 15 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The 48-42 defeat wasn’t the biggest issue—it was the devastating injuries to key players. Running back David Montgomery, defensive tackle Alim McNeill, and cornerback Khalil Dorsey are all out for the season, while Carlton Davis III will miss time with a jaw injury.
Before Sunday, Detroit’s defense was already decimated, losing six Week 1 starters, including star Aidan Hutchinson. The secondary, in particular, is a concern. Injuries to Dorsey, Davis, Ennis Rakestraw Jr., and Ifeatu Melifonwu have left the Lions shorthanded. Although Melifonwu might return soon, his Week 16 status remains unclear.
This leaves Detroit in dire need of cornerback depth. Fortunately, they can target a proven CB. Adam Schefter reported that the San Francisco 49ers waived Ambry Thomas, giving the Lions a chance to add him for the playoffs.
Thomas, a former Michigan standout and 2021 third-round pick, has played 42 games with 11 starts and four playoff appearances for the 49ers. Despite missing this season with a forearm injury, he is now reportedly healthy.
The Lions will likely start Terrion Arnold and Kindle Vildor at cornerback, with Amik Robertson and Brian Branch filling in as needed. Emmanuel Moseley will also see more snaps. However, signing Thomas could be the boost Detroit’s defense needs to maintain their Super Bowl hopes.
