Ben Johnson, the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator, could be an intriguing candidate for the Chicago Bears’ head coaching job, given his impressive work leading one of the NFL’s most potent offenses. Johnson, 38, has garnered significant interest after interviewing with seven teams in the past two years. He withdrew from interviews with the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders in 2023, deciding to remain with the Lions. His thoughtful approach to career progression, considering the risks of taking a head coaching position too soon, has helped build his reputation.

This season, the Lions are dominating offensively, ranking first in points per game, second in total yards, and showing creativity with unconventional plays like right tackle Penei Sewell attempting a pass. Johnson’s offensive schemes, including trick plays and varied strategies, have set Detroit apart.

Before entering the NFL, Johnson was a standout student-athlete, excelling in football and academics. He walked on at the University of North Carolina and quickly earned recognition for his football intelligence, eventually becoming the quarterback who relayed plays to the starter. His former coach, John Shoop, praised Johnson’s remarkable intelligence and his capacity to grasp the complexities of football.

Johnson’s path to the NFL involved working as a graduate assistant at Boston College and then as a quality control assistant with the Miami Dolphins, where he worked under now-Lions head coach Dan Campbell. His rise through the ranks is a testament to his dedication and intelligence. His work ethic and drive, combined with his football knowledge, have been key to his success.

While Johnson’s interest in a head coaching role remains unclear, it’s likely that his name will be a prominent one on the Bears’ list, as the franchise is committed to finding an offensive-minded leader to develop their star quarterback, Caleb Williams.
