Ben Johnson’s reputation continues to grow in NFL circles. The Lions’ offensive coordinator is regarded as one of the league’s top offensive minds, crafting a variety of plays and formations that confuse even elite defenses.

On Sunday, Johnson delivered another standout performance. The Bears’ defense crumbled under the pressure from Johnson and his crew, featuring Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Sam LaPorta. One play in the third quarter epitomized their creativity.

Here’s a breakdown of the play.

Lions’ Fake Fumble Against Bears, Explained

Detroit pulled out a trick play in the third quarter, inspired by former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne’s famous fumblerooski – but with a twist.

Just outside Chicago’s red zone with three downs remaining, the Lions executed a deceptive maneuver. Goff stumbled as if tossing to Jahmyr Gibbs, who lay flat on the field.

While it appeared the play had fallen apart, chaos in the pocket allowed Sam LaPorta to sprint downfield unnoticed.

Goff’s fake stumble and Gibbs’ prone position were merely diversions, creating space for LaPorta. Goff handed him the ball, adding another touchdown to Detroit’s tally.

Goff celebrated the play’s success, running to head coach Dan Campbell to highlight the performance.

Johnson’s trickery paid off. With NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reporting Johnson’s interest in the Bears’ head coaching job, it was the perfect showcase for his skills.

“He asked me Monday if I thought I could fake fumble,” Goff said postgame. “We worked on it all week, found the right moment, and it paid off.”
