The 49ers face a major challenge in stopping the Detroit Lions’ potent offense during their “Monday Night Football” clash at Levi’s Stadium.

Shanahan, known for his offensive expertise, understands the difficult task ahead for San Francisco’s defense as they prepare to battle Detroit.

During an interview on NBC Sports Bay Area, Shanahan explained why Detroit’s offense poses such a threat.

“It starts with their offensive line,” Shanahan told Papa. “That’s the difference-maker.

“They’ve got a number of first-round picks. I’m not sure how many, but they play like it. I’d expect four of them to make the Pro Bowl this year. Their line has been solid for a while.”

Detroit’s offensive line, featuring four first-round selections, provides a strong foundation that allows quarterback Jared Goff and the Lions’ playmakers to excel.

“Their physicality up front lets them dictate the game,” Shanahan said. “Add a dynamic back like Jahmyr Gibbs, with his speed and toughness, plus their blocking tight ends, and Goff thrives behind that line. He’s as accurate as any QB in the league.”

Goff, a former No. 1 pick who spent five years with the Rams, has faced Shanahan often. Shanahan praised Goff but emphasized the challenge in containing Detroit’s explosive offense.

“If you don’t disrupt him, change his feet or his angles, he’ll carve you up,” Shanahan said. “He’s done it for years. With that O-line and guys like [Amon-Ra] St. Brown at receiver, plus the speed of [Jameson] Williams, they’re tough to stop. Their tight end is excellent too, so they’re balanced everywhere.”

Detroit leads the NFL in scoring this season, averaging 32.8 points per game under offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. The Lions also rank second in total yards (6,129 yards, 408.6 per game) and hold a 13-2 record despite defensive injuries.

Though the 49ers are out of playoff contention, they aim to finish strong as they revisit last year’s NFC Championship matchup.

For San Francisco to win, their defense must deliver an exceptional performance to contain Detroit’s high-powered offense.
