This move would allow Campbell to join a Super Bowl contender. While multiple teams could file a waiver claim

The Detroit Lions faced a setback when star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson suffered a fractured leg earlier this season. Now, the team may have a shot at bolstering their defense with a key acquisition.

Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald revealed that the Miami Dolphins could release veteran defensive tackle Calais Campbell if they fall out of playoff contention.

This move would allow Campbell to join a Super Bowl contender. While multiple teams could file a waiver claim, Kelly noted that the Lions might be highly motivated to pursue him.

Calais Campbell Drawing Interest from Contenders

Campbell, 38, is having an impressive season, contributing 4.0 sacks and 46 tackles while anchoring Miami’s defensive line. Kelly mentioned that several top contenders could be interested in Campbell’s services.

“The Chiefs, aiming for a three-peat, might offer Campbell his best chance at a ring. Pairing him with Chris Jones could be a game-changer,” Kelly wrote.

“But the Lions and Vikings are also likely to show interest, potentially submitting a waiver claim to not only boost their defense but also block the Chiefs from adding the experienced lineman with the third-most active sacks.”

If the Lions pursue Campbell through waivers, they could secure him before he becomes a free agent and joins another contender.

Miami’s slim playoff chances hinge on Week 17 results. If the Broncos and Chargers win on Saturday, the Dolphins could be eliminated. Otherwise, they must beat the Browns on Sunday to stay in the race.

Lions Hopeful for Hutchinson’s Comeback

Hutchinson could still return this season, progressing steadily in rehab. Earlier this month, he expressed optimism about rejoining the team by February, possibly for the Super Bowl if the Lions advance.

“I’m on track to return for the Super Bowl,”  Hutchinson said on “The Squeeze” podcast, via ESPN. “I keep telling the guys, ‘Just get there, and I promise I’ll be back.’”

Detroit’s defense has endured multiple injuries, including the loss of cornerback Carlton Davis III to injured reserve.

Heading into Week 17 against the 49ers, the Lions received some positive news. Return specialist Kalif Raymond’s 21-day return window was activated after his stint on injured reserve.

Although head coach Dan Campbell wasn’t optimistic about Raymond playing against San Francisco, he hinted that another player might be ready sooner.

“We’ll evaluate him,” Campbell said via USA Today’s Lions Wire. “I’m less confident in him than Jalen Reeves-Maybin, but it’s encouraging to have him practicing again.”
