After the Los Angeles Rams’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on January 19, speculation around quarterback Matthew Stafford’s future has grown, with rumors about retirement and trades swirling. As the Rams’ season ended, Stafford began contemplating his next steps. Kelly Stafford, his wife, shared her insights about his decision-making process during a January 22 episode of her podcast, “Timeout.”

Kelly revealed that Stafford, who will turn 37 on February 7, is deeply considering his future in the NFL. She emphasized that she wouldn’t influence his decision, explaining, “It’s going to be entirely his call.” While she admitted that she would find it difficult if he chose to retire this season, Kelly expressed her support by saying she is there to listen, not to pressure him.

Following the Eagles game, Stafford texted Kelly saying they would talk about his decision. She responded, “You talk, I’ll listen.” Kelly emphasized that while Stafford wanted to make the decision together, it had to be his choice alone so he wouldn’t harbor any regrets. She also stated that although he would take his time, a decision would be needed soon, as the Rams will require clarity on their quarterback situation moving forward.

When asked about his future after the Eagles game, Stafford said he would need time to reflect. He acknowledged that he had been playing well and when asked if he still had more football in him, he confidently responded, “Sure feels like it.”

In a January 22 press conference, Rams Head Coach Sean McVay also commented on Stafford’s future, praising his performance. McVay noted that Stafford had been playing “really good football” and that his contribution to the team was invaluable. McVay highlighted Stafford’s ability to thrive in high-pressure situations, particularly in the playoffs, where he demonstrated his skill with 161 passing yards in the fourth quarter of the Eagles game, his most for the season.

McVay stated that discussions about Stafford’s future would happen at the right time, emphasizing his respect for Stafford both as a player and as a leader on the team.
