Detroit Lions Could Acquire 1 Major Contributor From New York Jets
After a strong 2024 NFL regular season, the Detroit Lions were eliminated in their first playoff game by the Washington Commanders. This was a tough defeat for a team that had hopes of a deep Super Bowl run.
As they head into the offseason, it’s evident that the Lions still have work to do in order to secure a Super Bowl victory.
Where might Detroit look to strengthen? A key area would be the defensive secondary.
Although the Lions have a solid defense, they could use another cornerback to improve coverage. One name that has been mentioned as a potential target is an intriguing option for the team.
Detroit Lions Could Target Major Contributor from New York Jets
Tyler Brooke of The 33rd Team has identified the Lions as a top landing spot in free agency for New York Jets cornerback D.J. Reed.
“Although he didn’t record any interceptions last season, he limited quarterbacks to a 58.3 completion rate when targeting him in 2024. In fact, he hasn’t allowed a completion rate higher than 61.4 over the last four years,” Brooke wrote.
“Reed has true No. 1 shutdown potential, which makes him a perfect fit for the Detroit Lions, who are losing Carlton Davis and Khalil Dorsey to free agency. With available cap space, they could afford to sign a top free agent, and Reed could form a strong duo with rookie Terrion Arnold for an impressive cornerback tandem.”
During the 2024 NFL season, Reed played 14 games for the Jets. He totaled 64 tackles, a sack, and 11 defended passes.
At 28 years old, a fresh start might be beneficial for Reed. He’s a top-tier talent who was stuck on a team that underperformed.
While returning to New York could be appealing with Aaron Glenn now hired as head coach, the Detroit Lions could also present an exciting opportunity for him.
Expect plenty of rumors surrounding the Lions this offseason as they aim to be aggressive in their championship pursuit. It wouldn’t be surprising if they pursue Reed.
