The Detroit Lions are enhancing their roster after a solid regular season and a quick playoff exit. Head coach Dan Campbell is strengthening the offensive staff by bringing in Tashard Choice, previously with Texas, as the team’s new running backs coach, according to 247Sports.
Jahmyr Gibbs, who had a standout year for the Lions, is familiar with Choice, having worked under him as his running back coach at Georgia Tech. This relationship could benefit Gibbs, especially after a season where he made a significant impact with the Lions. Additionally, this move could help other running backs on the roster reach their potential.
Although the Lions lost offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears, their offensive structure may not change drastically if the core players return.
Gibbs had a remarkable season, despite sharing the backfield with David Montgomery. He ended the regular season with 20 total touchdowns, leading the NFL in scrimmage touchdowns and setting a new Lions’ single-season franchise record, surpassing Barry Sanders’ previous record. Gibbs expressed amazement at this achievement, acknowledging the honor of being compared to someone like Sanders.
Former coaches have praised Gibbs for his abilities, with Bill O’Brien noting that aside from Bryce Young, Gibbs was the best player on offense, contributing both in the rushing and receiving game. His versatility as one of the fastest running backs in the league, able to line up as a receiving option or take handoffs, makes him a dual threat. Even with the load split between him and Montgomery, Gibbs has shown he can handle the primary role if needed.
