Derrick Barnes showcased his versatility as a linebacker for the Detroit Lions before a season-ending knee injury cut his year short. However, Barnes is set to enter free agency, making him one of the key decisions the Lions face in the upcoming weeks. Re-signing him makes sense due to his continued development under new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard, as well as the team’s need for a dependable SAM linebacker. Barnes and Sheppard have built a strong rapport, making this re-signing feel like a natural fit.

When considering potential options to fill a gap in Detroit’s defense, it’s hard not to imagine the impact Georgia’s Jalon Walker could have. Last season, Walker played all over the field, including on the defensive line, as an edge rusher, in the box, and even spent 61 snaps as a slot cornerback. His versatility stands out. Some experts project Walker as a pass rusher, while others see him as a linebacker. Regardless of his ultimate position, Walker possesses the skills, experience, and athleticism to thrive in either role.

“I’m just a football player,” Walker explained. “I love being on the field, no matter where I am. The excitement of lining up as an outside linebacker one play, then shifting to inside linebacker, or even playing star position—it’s just fun.”
