The Detroit Lions are facing significant challenges as they try to build a competitive roster in an NFC that’s becoming increasingly tough. One of the biggest hurdles for head coach Dan Campbell is replacing several key coaches, including both of his star coordinators. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who orchestrated the Lions’ dynamic offense, left for the Chicago Bears, while defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn took over as head coach of the New York Jets.

In the wake of these departures, Campbell has made several important changes to his staff. Former wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El was hired by Johnson in Chicago, and Scottie Montgomery was promoted to assistant head coach and wide receivers coach. Meanwhile, Tashard Choice, a former college running backs coach at Georgia Tech and Texas, was brought in to lead the Lions’ backfield.

Choice has garnered strong praise from former players, with ex-Texas running back Jaydon Blue speaking highly of his football IQ and leadership abilities during the NFL Combine. This type of praise reinforces that Campbell can successfully replace important members of his coaching staff, including Johnson, rather than being solely reliant on his former coordinators.

Choice, best known for his time as a player with the Cowboys and Bills, is regarded as a “genius” when it comes to developing running backs. He notably coached Pro Bowler Bijan Robinson and has a history with Jahmyr Gibbs from their time together at Georgia Tech. His connection with Gibbs could prove vital, as the Lions are expected to rely heavily on their potent running back duo of Gibbs and David Montgomery in 2025.

While replacing Johnson’s offensive brilliance will be difficult, Choice’s expertise should help keep the ground game efficient, allowing new offensive coordinator John Morton to focus on maintaining Jared Goff’s rhythm. Ultimately, the true test for Campbell will be proving that his success wasn’t just a result of luck with Johnson and Glenn, but rather his ability to assemble a talented coaching staff. The positive feedback surrounding Choice suggests Campbell may have a strong plan in place for the future.
