As the Detroit Lions continue refining their roster ahead of the 2025 NFL season, key players are making their expectations known. Among them, cornerback Carlton Davis has issued a firm statement regarding his future, making it clear that he intends to secure a contract that reflects his worth.
Davis previously faced free agency in 2022 as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ultimately choosing to stay with the team rather than exploring better financial opportunities elsewhere. Reflecting on that decision, he now acknowledges that he rushed into an agreement.
“I feel like last time, I panicked,” Davis told Mike Silver of The Athletic. “I was younger, and my mindset was, ‘I need to decide quickly.’ I thought, ‘This is the offer on the table, and if I wait, it’ll only decrease.’ But in reality, teams know what you’re worth, and right now, I’m playing my best football.”
Determined not to repeat past mistakes, Davis added, “This time, I won’t settle for anything less than what I deserve.”
Davis’ Contract Standpoint
The former Super Bowl champion joined the Lions in 2024 and could be on the move if a contract extension isn’t reached. While financial security is important, Davis emphasized that his demand isn’t purely about money—he wants proper recognition for his contributions.
“It’s not about needing money,” he explained. “I want to be happy. I’ve already won a Super Bowl, and I’ve earned a lot in my career. If it ended today, I wouldn’t be upset.
“But I’m in my prime, and the market for receivers and cornerbacks keeps rising. The salary cap is increasing, and NFL TV deals are bringing in even more revenue. Teams have the resources to pay players what they’re worth.”
He concluded his stance by saying, “If I accept less than my true value, I’m doing a disservice to myself and my family. I refuse to do that again.”
Potential Impact on Detroit’s Roster
When constructing a roster for a new season, difficult decisions often have to be made. In addition to Davis’ uncertain future, the Lions are also parting ways with Za’Darius Smith, who joined the team from the Cleveland Browns last offseason. Despite his contributions, the organization opted to move in a different direction, signaling further changes ahead for head coach Dan Campbell and his staff.
