Former Lions defensive back Will Harris has agreed to a two-year contract with the Washington Commanders, marking a new chapter in his NFL career.
A third-round pick by Detroit, Harris played five seasons with the Lions, appearing in 81 games and starting 40. During his time in Detroit, he transitioned from safety to cornerback before spending last season with the New Orleans Saints. He started 13 games for the Saints but was sidelined later in the year due to a hamstring injury.
In New Orleans, Harris demonstrated his versatility across the secondary. He played 113 snaps at slot corner, 352 at safety, 257 in the box, and even 112 on the defensive line. He finished the season with 74 tackles, including three for loss, and recorded one interception.
According to NFL Network, Harris’ contract is valued at $8 million, with incentives potentially raising the total to $10 million.
The day has also been active for safeties with Lions ties. Ifeatu Melifonwu is leaving Detroit for a one-year, $4 million deal with the Miami Dolphins, while C.J. Gardner-Johnson has been traded for the third straight offseason—this time from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Houston Texans in exchange for former first-round pick Kenyon Green.
Meanwhile, Detroit has been making roster moves of its own. The team has re-signed offensive lineman Dan Skipper and defensive lineman Myles Adams. Their biggest acquisition so far has been cornerback D.J. Reed, while they’ve also brought back edge rusher Marcus Davenport and parted ways with veteran Za’Darius Smith.
