After experiencing a period of consistency and success, the Detroit Lions have encountered a more turbulent offseason. A tough divisional loss to Washington set the tone, and the departures of both Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson only compounded the challenges.

While the idea of a “Super Bowl window” is often discussed, in reality, title contention in the NFL is more fleeting—a moment rather than an extended opportunity. With the defense undergoing significant changes following Glenn’s exit and the loss of several key starters from 2024, Detroit’s front office, led by Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell, faces a critical decision in next month’s draft.

Mel Kiper Jr. has never been one for unnecessary suspense, which makes sense given his role as a draft analyst. His latest mock draft, released Tuesday, offers Lions fans a much-needed dose of optimism. Kiper predicts that Detroit will use its first-round selection on an edge rusher, a move that couldn’t come at a better time. Aidan Hutchinson, no doubt, is taking notice.

Detroit Adds Firepower to Defensive Front in Latest 2025 NFL Mock Draft

Lions’ Pick: James Pearce Jr., OLB, Tennessee

Kiper believes that Pearce could be the ideal complement to Hutchinson on the defensive line. Detroit struggled last season to find a consistent presence opposite Hutchinson, with injuries forcing backups into significant roles. Midway through the year, the team acquired Za’Darius Smith, who contributed four sacks in eight games, but a long-term solution remains a priority.

Pearce recorded 7.5 sacks in 2024, but his impact went beyond just sack numbers—his 19% pressure rate ranked second in the FBS. His explosive burst and power make him a difficult matchup for offensive tackles, and his ability to generate pressure without additional blitzers is exactly what Detroit needs to compete at the highest level.

Given how injuries tested the Lions’ defensive depth last season, adding another elite pass rusher is a logical step. The Eagles’ Super Bowl victory demonstrated the value of a deep and talented pass rush, particularly when facing an offense like Kansas City’s. Strengthening this unit is the first step for Detroit. Next comes securing additional top-tier talent and, hopefully, avoiding another showdown with Washington.
