Throughout the offseason, Detroit Lions fans eagerly awaited a move to bolster a pass rush that saw only two players reach four sacks in 2024. However, the answer has yet to come. In fact, the Lions let one of those two players go. With the start of free agency, many hoped a major acquisition was on the horizon, but so far, the top options for strengthening the pass rush have all signed elsewhere. As a result, many are now predicting that the team will address the need for an edge rusher in the first round of the upcoming draft.
However, Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton recently proposed a surprise trade option. In an article about unexpected offseason trades, Moton suggested that the Lions could trade for Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Bryce Huff in exchange for a fourth- and seventh-round pick in this year’s draft. While an intriguing option, acquiring Huff would be a risky gamble for the Lions. The $51 million contract Huff signed with the Eagles last offseason was entirely unearned after just one season. Huff had a breakout year with the New York Jets in 2023, recording 10 sacks. However, his career outside of that one season has been underwhelming, with only 10 sacks over his first four NFL seasons. This past year, Huff posted just two sacks and 20 pressures over 12 games, ranking a disappointing 102nd and 87th among edge rushers, respectively, according to Pro Football Focus.
The Lions have shown reluctance to invest heavily in players with uncertain production or those with a limited history of success. This makes it unlikely that the team would commit to Huff, given his one impressive season. While the Lions are certain to make a move to address their edge rush this offseason, this trade proposal seems far-fetched.
