The Detroit Lions are looking to strengthen their already potent offense by potentially adding another dynamic wide receiver in this year’s NFL draft. According to Christian Booher of SI.com, one intriguing option for the Lions could be Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden, known for his exceptional speed. Booher suggests that Golden, who is projected as a first-round pick, could be available at No. 28 overall. His remarkable 4.29-second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine, along with his quick footwork, route-running ability, and solid hands, make him an attractive target for the Lions.
Golden had an impressive college career, finishing his final season with 58 catches, 987 yards, and nine touchdowns. His versatility, including some return ability, could provide multiple ways for him to contribute at the NFL level. With key offensive players already in place, like Pro Bowl receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and strong running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, Golden’s speed could add a new dimension to their passing game.
While the Lions have other needs to address, such as adding a pass rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson, their well-rounded roster might give them the flexibility to focus on a receiver like Golden in the first round.
The team also faces an important decision regarding another fast wide receiver, Jameson Williams, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Williams has shown flashes of potential but has faced off-field issues, including suspensions for gambling and violating league policies on performance-enhancing drugs. If the Lions decide to draft Golden, they would have the opportunity to evaluate him in his rookie season and decide whether he can take over Williams’ role or if they should bring Williams back with a new contract.
