Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes acknowledged the frustration fans feel regarding the team’s quiet approach in free agency. He reassured them by sharing the team’s strategy, emphasizing their focus on both winning now and ensuring long-term sustainability as contenders.

Holmes pointed out that if he were a fan, he too would be eager for big-name acquisitions. However, he stressed that the Lions’ decision-making is guided by the need to balance immediate success with future financial responsibility. With numerous key player extensions looming, Holmes is aware that adding external players could jeopardize the team’s ability to retain its own talent both this year and in the coming seasons.

Holmes explained that he and head coach Dan Campbell align early in the process about which players to keep and which new additions to pursue. While bringing back last year’s players wasn’t just about nostalgia, he understands that it might not be as thrilling for fans. Free agency often creates excitement because it’s the first major event following the Super Bowl, and the hype is centered around new faces.

He also addressed the team’s decision not to pursue high-priced players like cornerback DJ Reed, whose contract demands were beyond their budget. The general manager noted that letting go of players like Za’Darius Smith saved over $11 million, allowing them to focus on retaining homegrown talent like Derrick Barnes and Levi Onwuzurike.

Looking ahead, Holmes mentioned that players like Kerby Joseph and Aidan Hutchinson are likely to receive extensions soon. Additionally, the team is evaluating Jameson Williams’ future, as his fifth-year option is coming up. Holmes likened the team’s financial decisions to personal budgeting, explaining that just as you can’t always afford the vacation you want because of ongoing responsibilities, the Lions’ financial strategy is designed to avoid overextending now, with the goal of securing long-term success.

He concluded by acknowledging that while the financial discipline required in managing the salary cap might be difficult for fans to understand, it’s crucial to the team’s efforts to build a competitive roster both now and in the future. Holmes reiterated his appreciation for the fanbase, even if they might not always agree with the strategy.
