Top 10 Potential Draft Picks for the Lions at No. 28 in the 2025 NFL Draft
With the NFL Draft just days away, Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes is wrapping up final evaluations. The Lions head into this year’s draft with seven total selections, including one pick in each of the first four rounds, then one in the sixth and two in the seventh. Thanks to a well-rounded roster, Holmes has some flexibility—he might move up to snag a top-tier player or trade back to collect extra picks while still landing a solid contributor early on Day 2.
But if Detroit holds its ground at pick No. 28, here are 10 prospects who could be on their radar and fit well with the team:
1. OL Grey Zabel, North Dakota State
Zabel is a favorite among draft analysts due to his rare versatility. He has starting experience at all positions along the offensive line, including both tackles, both guard spots, and even worked at center in pre-draft workouts. A technically refined run blocker, Zabel’s ability to play multiple roles could make him a valuable piece for Detroit.
2. EDGE Shemar Stewart, Texas A&M
At 6-foot-5 and 267 pounds, Stewart has the physical profile of a premier edge defender. While his sack numbers (just 4.5 in the last three years) may raise eyebrows, his game tape tells a different story. Stewart was the Aggies’ top pressure generator last year with 39 and could elevate his game even more playing alongside a talent like Aidan Hutchinson.
3. DT Derrick Harmon, Oregon
A transfer from Michigan State, Harmon had a breakout year at Oregon, leading all interior D-linemen in pressures with 55. His 2024 campaign also included 45 total tackles, 10.5 for loss, and 5 sacks. A disruptive force up the middle, Harmon could bring interior pass-rush punch to Detroit’s defensive front.
4. LB Jihaad Campbell, Alabama
Campbell brings high-level production and position flexibility, having played MIKE, WILL, and even on the edge during his time at Alabama. He topped the Crimson Tide in tackles (117), TFLs (11.5), sacks (5), and forced fumbles (2). Given Holmes’ track record with Bama prospects, Campbell feels like a natural target.
5. WR Matthew Golden, Texas
While Detroit’s current WR corps is solid, the future at the position is unclear. Enter Golden—a burner who ran a 4.29 40-yard dash and averaged over 20 yards per reception in most of his games last season. He also brings added value as an elite kick returner, taking two to the house in 2024.
6. EDGE Mykel Williams, Georgia
Williams offers scheme versatility, having lined up across the defensive front for Georgia. His combination of length, athleticism, and production—67 tackles, 21.5 TFLs, 14 sacks over three years—makes him a high-upside pass-rusher. He could rotate early and develop into a long-term starter.
7. S Xavier Watts, Notre Dame
With limited experienced depth behind starters Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch, the Lions could benefit from a ball-hawking safety like Watts. He tied for second in the FBS with six interceptions last year, following a national-best seven in 2023. His instincts and range would complement Detroit’s secondary well.
8. IOL Donovan Jackson, Ohio State
Jackson brings three years of starting experience on Ohio State’s line, having played both guard and tackle. His blend of power and mobility fits Detroit’s blocking scheme, and his ability to shift positions boosts his value. With 53 games under his belt, he’s one of the most seasoned linemen in the draft.
9. OT Josh Conerly Jr., Oregon
Although the Lions have a strong starting duo in Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell, they could start planning for the future. Decker turns 32 this year, and Conerly could be groomed as his eventual replacement. He gave up just one sack and nine pressures over 494 snaps in 2024, anchoring a top-tier Oregon line.
10. DT Walter Nolen, Ole Miss
Nolen is a powerful, quick interior lineman who consistently disrupted offenses last season. He racked up 14 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, and batted down three passes. Pairing him with Alim McNeill could create one of the most formidable defensive tackle duos in the league.
