Entering the 2025 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions didn’t have glaring holes to address. Coming off a 2024 campaign where they were arguably the league’s most complete team, the front office was simply looking for a few upgrades. A reinforcement at guard was one possibility, but bolstering the defensive line—either with a dominant edge rusher or a forceful interior presence—was likely a priority.
When star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson went down early last season, Detroit managed to hold strong despite losing a major component of its pass rush. Hutchinson’s ability to wreck plays is undeniable, but relying solely on him isn’t sustainable. Adding another young, explosive player on the edge—or someone who can consistently collapse the pocket—would take pressure off Hutchinson and elevate the entire defense.
The Lions, having built a solid foundation through recent drafts, had the luxury of taking a swing in the first round. Unlike teams picking out of desperation, Detroit could afford to draft based on long-term upside rather than immediate need.
Detroit Snags Defensive Tackle Tyleik Williams
In a fortunate twist, Ohio State’s Tyleik Williams was still available when the Lions were on the clock. Though his 6’3″, 335-pound frame screams nose tackle, Williams is far from one-dimensional. He combines size with surprising agility, making him effective against the run and a potential menace on passing downs. Opposing offenses will be forced to key in on him, which in turn should free up Hutchinson to wreak even more havoc.
What makes this pick even sweeter is that the Lions didn’t need Williams to contend—they’re already equipped to make a playoff run. But his presence on the defensive front could be the X-factor they’ve been missing. Despite changes among the coaching staff this offseason, head coach Dan Campbell remains the driving force behind the team’s culture and identity.
Williams could quickly establish himself as a cornerstone on Detroit’s defensive line. If he lives up to expectations, he might be the final addition needed to help bring the Lions their first-ever Super Bowl title.
