Another Rookie Snubs Lions, Chooses Raiders Instead

As the dust settles from the 2025 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions are still working to bolster their roster. After adding seven new draftees in Green Bay, the team has been active in signing undrafted free agents, including Boston College’s Kyle Robichaux and Georgia’s Jackson Meeks.

With one of the league’s top coaching staffs and a competitive roster, Detroit should be an attractive spot for young talent. However, despite the team’s appeal, another undrafted rookie has chosen a different path. This time, an international prospect passed on the Lions in favor of another team.

Former Rugby Player Laki Tasi Picks Raiders Over Lions

Laki Tasi, a defensive lineman who entered the league through the NFL’s International Pathway Program (IPP), has decided to join the Las Vegas Raiders instead of attending Detroit’s rookie minicamp. The IPP gives global athletes a route into the NFL, and has helped launch careers like that of Philadelphia Eagles lineman Jordan Mailata.

Tasi, who hails from Brisbane and has a background in rugby with Ashgrove GPS in Queensland, boasts a massive frame — 6-foot-6, 347 pounds, with an 81.5-inch wingspan. He’s recently transitioned to football and trained to sharpen his skills for the NFL.

Although the Lions showed interest by offering him a spot at their minicamp, Tasi ultimately signed with the Raiders — likely due to a clearer path to playing time on their thinner defensive roster. His decision marks the second such rejection for Detroit this week, following BYU cornerback Jakob Robinson’s choice to sign with the 49ers instead.

While Detroit may have missed out on a potentially intriguing talent, Tasi now faces the challenge of proving himself in Las Vegas. Time will tell if he made the right move, especially given the Lions’ rising status as a playoff contender.
