Dan Campbell’s Strategy for Rebuilding Lions After Coaching Departures Shared by GM Brad Holmes

The Detroit Lions are entering the new NFL season with a few setbacks already in place. Head coach Dan Campbell, known for his leadership and strong locker room presence, has had to deal with the loss of two key coordinators. Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn left to become the New York Jets’ new head coach, while offensive mastermind Ben Johnson accepted the head coaching job with the Chicago Bears.

These major coaching losses have placed extra responsibility on Campbell as he prepares for the season. However, he has approached the situation with calm and focus. Lions General Manager Brad Holmes recently spoke about Campbell’s methodical approach to rebuilding the staff.

“Dan deserves a lot of credit. While we had a sense that Glenn and Johnson might move on, we weren’t entirely prepared for the number of coaches who were hired away,” Holmes said.
“What impressed me was Dan’s patience. He didn’t rush to fill spots just for the sake of it. He was focused on finding the right fit, and in the end, he did a fantastic job. We brought in some excellent coaches.”

In addition to Glenn and Johnson, the Lions saw six more assistant coaches depart. Campbell responded by bringing in John Morton and promoting Kelvin Sheppard within the organization, continuing his commitment to building a strong and cohesive coaching unit.

Dan Campbell Discusses Jameson Williams’ High Ceiling

Despite the coaching overhaul, Campbell remains locked in on getting the Lions to the postseason. One of the players he’s especially excited about is wide receiver Jameson Williams, whose development has been a major talking point heading into the season.

“We’ve got so many options with Jameson — both outside and in the slot. His speed is elite, and he’s added strength. His ability to stop and explode out of breaks is scary for defenders. When someone that fast can also stop on a dime, it makes him a nightmare to cover,” Campbell explained.

Although the Lions are facing a transitional period, there’s strong belief in Campbell’s ability to guide the team forward. His leadership, combined with emerging talents like Williams, has the organization optimistic about their chances in the upcoming season.
