A new spark of tension may be brewing between the Detroit Lions and the Indiana Fever, as both franchises head into pivotal moments in their seasons. While the Fever aim to build momentum during the latter half of their campaign and secure a playoff spot, the Lions are focusing on retooling for a strong showing in the 2025 NFL season.

However, a recent comment has unexpectedly intertwined the cities of Detroit and Indianapolis in an off-field clash.

The drama began when Sophie Cunningham, a guard for the Indiana Fever, made controversial remarks about a few U.S. cities during a discussion about the WNBA’s upcoming expansion. The league recently confirmed that three new teams will be introduced over the next five years — with Cleveland joining in 2028, Detroit in 2029, and Philadelphia in 2030.

When asked for her thoughts, Cunningham didn’t hold back, voicing skepticism about fan excitement in certain markets.

“You’ve got to consider what the players want. Like, where do they want to play?” Cunningham said. “Where’s the hype, where are fans going to actually come out and show up? I’m not so sure anyone’s thrilled to go to places like Detroit or Cleveland.”

Her comments stirred backlash almost immediately. NBA stars Donovan Mitchell and Tristan Thompson, both of the Cleveland Cavaliers, responded online in defense of their city. But the reaction didn’t end in the NBA.

Dan Skipper, offensive tackle for the Detroit Lions, joined the growing list of those offended. He took to social media to issue a firm rebuttal, praising Detroit as a great sports city.

“Ever been to Detroit? Solid place to play,” Skipper posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Well, maybe not for you anymore.”

Interestingly, the same night that sparked controversy also brought celebration for the Fever. Without Caitlin Clark in the lineup, the team defeated the Minnesota Lynx 74-59 to capture their first-ever WNBA Commissioner’s Cup championship.

Cunningham, despite her earlier off-court drama, played a key role in the victory — coming off the bench to score 13 points and collect 7 rebounds in 25 minutes. She also hit 3 of her 5 three-point attempts, finishing with a team-best plus-18 rating.

While the Fever earned a landmark title on the court, Cunningham’s comments have ignited a different kind of fire — this time in the heart of Detroit.
