Although it feels like ages ago, it’s only been a few seasons since the Detroit Lions traded long-time quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in a blockbuster deal that brought Jared Goff to Detroit. Since then, Stafford has remained one of the league’s more notable quarterbacks — and he’s not done yet.

Despite speculation that Stafford might call it quits after the 2024-25 NFL season, the veteran signal-caller has opted to return for another campaign. At 37 years old, he’s entering a stage in his career where most NFL players consider retirement, especially given the physical toll the sport takes on the body. While some quarterbacks have extended their careers into their 40s, it’s far from the norm — making Stafford’s next moves especially interesting.

Recently, CBS Sports analyst Tyler Sullivan weighed in on Stafford’s future. In a June 24 article listing players potentially nearing retirement, Sullivan included Stafford — but not in the way many expected. Contrary to widespread belief, Sullivan predicted Stafford won’t hang up his cleats after this season.

Sullivan pointed out that Stafford nearly left the Rams this past offseason, exploring opportunities with other teams before agreeing to a new two-year deal that keeps him in L.A. through 2026. Although retirement rumors have lingered, Sullivan believes Stafford’s performance level and the Rams’ competitive outlook make it unlikely he’ll walk away anytime soon — unless injury changes the narrative.

“Stafford remains a high-performing quarterback,” Sullivan wrote, “and with the Rams projected to be contenders, it’ll be tough for him to step away while they’re in the title hunt.”

This could spell more playoff clashes between the Lions and their former QB — a storyline Detroit fans would love to put behind them.

Goff’s Deepening Roots in Detroit

On the other side of the trade, Jared Goff continues to cement his place in Detroit — both on and off the field. On June 30, it was announced that a group of investors, including Goff, was officially granted a WNBA expansion franchise set to launch in 2029.

This ownership group, spearheaded by Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores, also includes Lions owner Sheila Hamp, music icon Eminem, former NBA stars Grant Hill and Chris Webber, and GM CEO Mary Barra. Goff’s involvement underscores his growing commitment to the Motor City, far beyond just football.
