The 2025 NFL season will begin with a marquee matchup as the Detroit Lions face the Los Angeles Chargers in the annual Hall of Fame Game, held in Canton, Ohio. This high-profile clash is scheduled to take place at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium and promises to be a thrilling opener, as both teams are seen as strong contenders for Super Bowl LX in February.
“This game features two teams that can be considered legitimate contenders to reach Super Bowl LX next February,” said Jim Porter, President and CEO of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “For them to face each other right out of the gate in Canton, Ohio, should create a dynamic opening to another spectacular NFL season.”
The game will carry added emotional significance for the Chargers, as it coincides with the Hall of Fame induction of legendary tight end Antonio Gates. Gates, who spent his entire 15-season NFL career with the Chargers, will be formally honored on August 2. Widely regarded as one of the best tight ends in league history, Gates is being enshrined alongside fellow inductees Eric Allen, Jared Allen, and Sterling Sharpe.
Prior to kickoff, the Hall of Fame class will be introduced on the field in a special ceremony that kicks off the weekend festivities. The new Hall of Famers will receive their iconic Gold Jackets the following night during a ceremony in downtown Canton, and their official enshrinement will take place on Saturday, August 2.
With championship aspirations on both sides and legendary figures being honored, the 2025 Hall of Fame Game sets the stage for an exciting NFL season ahead. Fans can expect a celebration of both past greatness and future promise as the league returns to action.
