A beloved former Detroit Lions defensive lineman is closing the chapter on his football career — and he’s doing it with a deeply emotional farewell that reflects just how much the game and his family have meant to him.

Even after players leave Detroit, fans often follow their journeys in the league. One such player, Ndamukong Suh, who began his NFL career with the Lions, has now officially stepped away from the sport, delivering a heartfelt message that resonates with anyone who’s followed his path.

This wasn’t just a typical retirement post — it was a powerful and touching moment of reflection. Suh chose to reveal his decision on a significant personal date: the first anniversary of his father’s passing. That timing made the announcement all the more poignant, as Suh honored the man who had the greatest influence on both his life and career.

In his social media post, Suh expressed that the choice to retire was guided by his late father’s final words. He described July 12, 2024, as the most difficult day of his life — the day he lost his father. Now, exactly one year later, he’s choosing to leave the game, honoring the memory and advice of the man who meant so much to him.

“He wasn’t just my dad — he was my hero, mentor, and the foundation of who I am,” Suh wrote. “He instilled in me the values of discipline, determination, and focus.” He continued by reflecting on how his father’s presence shaped every moment on the field: “Every play I made carried his spirit. When I stepped onto the field, I carried his voice with me, reminding me of the name I represent.”

Suh also revealed the pivotal conversation they shared before his father’s passing: “He told me it was time to walk away from football. That I had accomplished all I needed to, and it was time to embrace what comes next.” He said that guidance stayed with him and led to his decision to retire exactly one year later.

Looking Back at Suh’s Impact

Drafted second overall by the Lions in 2010, Suh immediately made waves in his debut season — racking up 10 sacks, grabbing an interception, scoring a touchdown, and earning First-Team All-Pro recognition. He was also named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year, quickly establishing himself as one of the league’s most dominant forces.

Though his time with the Lions ended in 2014, Suh went on to play for several teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles most recently. Despite the years since his departure from Detroit, fans still hold him in high regard for all he brought to the team during some challenging seasons.

Now, as he turns the page to a new phase of life, Suh carries with him the respect of fans across the league — especially those in the Motor City, where his NFL story began.
