Marcus Davenport Branded Potential ‘Bust’ Ahead of Crucial 2025 Season with Lions
The Detroit Lions are hoping history doesn’t repeat itself with a key defensive player.
Marcus Davenport was brought in ahead of the 2024 season with the goal of elevating the team’s pass rush, but his campaign was derailed early due to injury, leaving the team disappointed.
Despite that setback, Detroit opted to roll the dice on Davenport again this offseason, re-signing him on a one-year deal. After a full OTA schedule, he’s focused on staying healthy through training camp and finally contributing on the field.
With the regular season looming, the Lions are counting on Davenport to be a productive edge rusher opposite a revitalized Aidan Hutchinson. However, not everyone believes that bet will pay off.
In a recent article by Kristopher Knox for Bleacher Report, Davenport was pegged as the Lions’ most likely bust for the 2025 season. Knox cited Davenport’s ongoing injury history and inconsistent output as major concerns.
“Although Detroit doesn’t have a large financial stake in Davenport, they are once again hoping he can be a dependable pass-rushing partner for Hutchinson,” Knox wrote. “But based on his track record, that may be overly optimistic.”
Davenport only played two games last year due to a torn triceps and suited up for just four contests the season prior because of ankle issues. He hasn’t recorded more than five sacks in any season, raising questions about whether he can finally meet expectations.
