Dan Campbell Shares Why Detroit Is Home: “This City Was Made for Me”

During a recent appearance on Dallas’ 96.7 AM The Ticket, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell made it crystal clear: he’s found his place, and it’s in the heart of Detroit. More than just a coach for the team, Campbell feels intrinsically tied to the city’s soul—a perfect match of grit, determination, and heart.

From the outside, it’s evident that Campbell’s fire and leadership have sparked a transformation in Detroit. In just four years, he’s helped elevate the Lions to heights fans have waited decades to see. But hearing it straight from Campbell himself confirms what fans already suspected—he’s not just coaching in Detroit, he’s living it.

“This is where I’m supposed to be,” Campbell said with conviction. “You don’t always know if that head coaching shot will ever come. And when it did, there was only one organization that truly believed in me—and that was Detroit. Everything here aligns with who I am. The ownership, the city, the people, the fans… this blue-collar, hard-working mindset—it’s in my blood. This place wraps around me like it was tailored for me.”

Campbell also took a moment to shine a light on Lions owner Sheila Hamp, praising her for the unwavering trust and freedom she’s given him since day one.

“When you have an owner that looks you in the eye and says, ‘Do what you need to do. I’ve got your back. I’ll get you the tools, the resources—just be yourself,’ that changes everything,” Campbell shared. “I never have to second-guess myself here. I don’t need to filter who I am. I coach with my whole heart, and I live that way too. That kind of support—it’s rare. It’s special.”

As for the future? Campbell’s vision is laser-focused: bringing a Lombardi Trophy home to Detroit.

“I love this job. I’m not going anywhere. But we’ve got work to do,” he said. “We need to win a Super Bowl. That’s the mission. You win one, then you go get another. That’s the dream—and I want to bring it to this city more than anything.”

Last year, the Lions solidified their commitment to this shared dream, signing Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes to contract extensions through 2027. With their leadership, Detroit isn’t just hoping for a title—they’re building a team that can make it happen
