Frank Ragnow’s Retirement Becomes Official; Lions Free Up Roster Spot

The Detroit Lions have officially placed veteran center Frank Ragnow on the reserve/retired list, confirming the end of his NFL career and creating an open slot on their 90-man offseason roster. This move was processed as rookies reported back to the team facility on Wednesday.

Ragnow had previously shared his retirement decision on Instagram back in June. In his emotional message, the former Pro Bowler reflected on the difficult choice to walk away after seven seasons, citing long-standing health concerns and a need to prioritize his family’s well-being.

“The last few months have been incredibly tough as I’ve come to terms with stepping away from the game,” Ragnow wrote. “As much as I wanted to keep going, my body just isn’t cooperating anymore. It’s time to focus on my health and what’s best for my family. I’ve poured everything I had into this team, and while I thought I could keep giving more — the truth is, I can’t.”

With his name now appearing on the NFL transaction report under the retired designation, the Lions gain one roster spot ahead of training camp. It’s worth noting that Ahmed Hassanein still holds an international exemption and does not count against the roster cap.

In a separate move, the Lions reached an injury settlement with defensive back Divaad Wilson, who was waived from injured reserve. Wilson, a recent addition signed on June 2, sustained a knee injury that required surgery shortly after joining the team. He was initially waived on June 4. Since he was on injured reserve, his release doesn’t affect the team’s roster count. However, under NFL rules, Wilson could potentially re-sign with the Lions after his agreed recovery period plus an extra three weeks.

Ultimately, the only roster space created from these transactions comes from Ragnow’s retirement, giving the Lions some flexibility as they prepare for camp.
