Lions Eyeing Veteran Pass Rusher Matthew Judon to Fill Za’Darius Smith Void
Since parting ways with edge rusher Za’Darius Smith back in March, the Detroit Lions have yet to find a true replacement at the position. Outside of star Aidan Hutchinson, the team lacks proven depth on the edge, making pass rush a clear area of concern heading into the season.
While the door remains open for a potential reunion with Smith, Pro Football Network’s Jacob Infante suggests another option: veteran linebacker Matthew Judon. Infante mentioned that Detroit, along with other edge-needy teams like the Chicago Bears, should consider adding Judon to bolster their defensive front.
“There’s a chance Judon goes back to New England, but the Lions and Bears could certainly use his presence,” Infante noted.
Judon, who was with the Atlanta Falcons in 2024, posted 5.5 sacks and 25 quarterback pressures over 17 games. Atlanta had acquired him in a trade, but after an underwhelming year, the team opted not to bring him back.
At 32, Judon might not be the same game-wrecker he once was, but he could still offer reliable production for a contender. Detroit, aiming for another deep playoff run, could benefit from his experience and pass-rushing ability, especially at a reasonable price.
Though his recent seasons have been inconsistent, Judon is only a few years removed from a dominant 2022 season with the Patriots, where he racked up 15.5 sacks. If the Lions sign him, he could either rediscover that form or serve as a valuable rotational piece across from Hutchinson.
