Former Lions Edge Rusher Gets Fresh Start with Cowboys

James Houston, a former Detroit Lions pass rusher whose career stalled after a promising start, is getting another shot—this time with the Dallas Cowboys.

Multiple sources confirm that Houston is signing with Dallas, hoping to revive a career that began with great potential. Drafted by the Lions in the sixth round in 2022, Houston initially didn’t crack the 53-man roster but stayed on Detroit’s practice squad. His relentless performance in practice sessions eventually earned him a spot on the active roster later that season.

Once activated, Houston made an immediate impact. He recorded an impressive 8 sacks in just seven games during his rookie campaign, quickly drawing attention as a breakout performer.

However, his momentum was derailed in his second year when he suffered a fractured ankle during a special teams play. The injury sidelined him for most of the season, limiting him to just two appearances. Upon his return, hopes were still high for his development, but he struggled to evolve into a more complete defender.

Houston never quite fit the Lions’ SAM linebacker role, and the burst he had shown as a rookie didn’t fully return. In 2024, he played in eight games but registered only one sack. Detroit eventually waived him in November, and he briefly landed with the Cleveland Browns, appearing in three games to finish the season.

Now, Houston heads to a Dallas defense stacked with talent. He joins a group that features stars like Micah Parsons, veteran Dante Fowler Jr., and rookie second-round pick Donovan Ezeiruaku. If Houston hopes to stick on the roster, he’ll need to impress quickly in training camp and preseason action.
