Linebacker Alex Anzalone hasn’t appeared at the Detroit Lions’ training camp yet, and the reason remains unclear. It could be due to an unresolved contract situation or possibly a hamstring issue. While both team officials and Anzalone have offered some insight, the full picture is still murky.

Regardless of the cause, the Lions have to press forward with training camp. In Anzalone’s absence, other players are getting an opportunity to step up and prove their worth, particularly at linebacker—a position where Anzalone has been a key contributor and vocal leader hoping to end his career in Detroit.

One player seizing this opportunity is seasoned linebacker Zach Cunningham. As reported by team insider Tim Twentyman, Cunningham has taken full advantage of the increased reps and has quickly made an impression during early camp practices. His physical presence and tackling ability have been highlighted as standout traits.

“Zach Cunningham has stepped up impressively while Anzalone recovers. He stood out in early run-game drills with his tackling instincts. Head coach Dan Campbell has spoken positively about Cunningham’s athleticism, and it’s already showing on the field. He’s shaping up to be a reliable depth piece once Anzalone returns,” Twentyman noted.

Cunningham Making a Case for Bigger Role

While it seems unlikely that Anzalone’s holdout will turn into a lengthy dispute like that of Haason Reddick, it’s a reminder that success in the NFL comes with new challenges. Winning teams must invest in their foundational players to maintain long-term momentum and chemistry.

Still, Cunningham’s resurgence is a silver lining. After a forgettable 2024 season in which he appeared in only seven games for the Broncos and registered just four tackles, his performance in Detroit’s camp is promising. He was once a consistent 100-tackle player, and rediscovering that form could be a major boost for the Lions.

If Anzalone decides to remain off the field until a new deal is finalized, Cunningham’s ability to fill that gap alongside Jack Campbell could give the Lions a solid linebacker pairing heading into the season.
