Lions Suffer Two Injuries in Preseason Matchup vs. Chargers
The Detroit Lions came away from their preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers with two injury concerns that could impact roster depth.
Offensive lineman Dan Skipper was seen wearing a walking boot on his left foot following the game. He explained to reporters that he sustained an ankle injury during a second-half play—a 10-yard run by Craig Reynolds. Skipper was taken out in the second quarter and replaced by second-year tackle Giovanni Manu, who remained at left tackle for the rest of the contest.
The Lions are relatively thin when it comes to backup options behind starting tackles Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker. Skipper has been the primary reserve over the past few seasons, but this year, he faces competition from Manu, a developmental player, and veteran Jamarco Jones, who has made seven career starts over six NFL seasons.
Tight end Kenny Yeboah also left the game with a leg injury after being rolled up on in the second half. Although the injury looked serious in real time, Yeboah provided a somewhat optimistic update after the game in the locker room.
Yeboah is currently battling for what is likely the final tight end slot on the Lions’ 53-man roster, alongside Shane Zylstra and rookie Zach Horton.
Head coach Dan Campbell is not expected to provide injury updates until Sunday’s scheduled press conference.
