As the Detroit Lions prepare for their 2025 campaign, cornerback Terrion Arnold steps into the CB1 role—a position that may ultimately determine how far this team can go.
Arnold joins forces with Brian Branch, Kerby Joseph, Amik Robertson, and newcomer D.J. Reed in an effort to create turnovers and limit opponents’ aerial attacks. With the pass rush anchored by Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport, the secondary’s ability to hold up in coverage is crucial.
Arnold’s importance has only grown with second-year defender Ennis Rakestraw Jr. sidelined for the season due to a shoulder injury. Entering his second year, Arnold is expected to build on the momentum he developed last season, when he showed significant growth after a shaky start.
That’s why ESPN’s Ben Solak identified him as Detroit’s biggest “x-factor” heading into the new season, especially with the Lions eyeing a Super Bowl push.
“A first-rounder in 2024, Arnold found his footing after some early penalty issues. By the end of the year, his coverage skills had made real strides. This season, he’ll face tougher matchups, and if defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard sticks with his aggressive scheme, Arnold will frequently be left in man-to-man situations. It’s a demanding job, but Arnold has the tools to handle it,” Solak explained.
If Arnold can elevate his play from simply defending passes to consistently coming away with interceptions, he could enter the conversation for an All-Defense team selection. Already trusted with matching up against opposing WR1s each week, his next step is punishing quarterbacks for challenging him.
Meanwhile, the Lions are leaning on Reed as the second corner after Carlton Davis III departed for the New England Patriots. Reed, formerly with the Jets, brings experience and skill, though he allowed 56 completions last season and earned a modest 50.4 coverage grade from PFF. Detroit hopes Arnold’s progression will balance out any inconsistency.
With a tough opening schedule ahead, Arnold’s ability to set the tone early could be what keeps Detroit on track for another deep postseason run.
