ESPN’s Dan Graziano Reports: Detroit Lions Land Massive Advantage Ahead of 2025 NFL Free Agency

The Detroit Lions received some encouraging news as they prepare for the upcoming NFL free agency period, which officially kicks off at 4 p.m. ET on March 12, 2025. With teams expected to make significant moves, the Lions are positioning themselves to strengthen their roster in hopes of making another deep playoff run.

Increased Salary Cap Benefits Detroit

On February 19, ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported that the NFL had informed teams that the 2025 salary cap would range between $277.5 million and $281.5 million. Then, on February 27, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network confirmed that the final cap figure was set at $279.2 million. This marks a substantial jump from the previous year’s $255.4 million, providing teams—including Detroit—with an additional $22-$26 million in spending power.

According to Over the Cap, Detroit is projected to have roughly $51.5 million in cap space before factoring in incentives, bonuses, and other adjustments. This increase gives the Lions greater flexibility to sign new talent, retain key players, and make strategic roster moves.

Rasul Douglas as a Potential Free Agent Target

With additional cap space available, Detroit may look to address one of its biggest weaknesses—cornerback depth. NFL analyst Nick Shook recently identified Buffalo Bills cornerback Rasul Douglas as an ideal fit for the Lions.

Douglas has consistently found himself on competitive teams throughout his career, aside from a brief stint with the Carolina Panthers in 2020. Shook believes Douglas would be a smart addition for a Detroit team with Super Bowl aspirations, as he wouldn’t require a massive contract and could provide much-needed defensive depth.

This move would be particularly beneficial since five of the Lions’ cornerbacks, including starter Carlton Davis, are set to hit free agency.

Lions Free Agents Who Could Depart

While the Lions are looking to add talent, they may also lose key contributors. NFL writer Gregg Rosenthal speculated that veteran guard Kevin Zeitler, who had an impressive season with Detroit, could reunite with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson in Chicago if the Bears pursue him in free agency.

Additionally, defensive end Marcus Davenport is another Lion who might test the open market, potentially leaving Detroit searching for replacements on the defensive line.

With free agency just around the corner, Detroit is in a strong financial position to make impactful moves, whether by retaining key players or bringing in fresh talent to bolster its roster.
