ESPN's Dan Orlovsky Explains Reasons Detroit Lions Fans Should Trust John Morton Hire

The Detroit Lions have appointed John Morton as offensive coordinator, and although he may not be a widely recognized name, ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky has provided a compelling reason for optimism regarding the hire.

The Lions acted quickly after losing both coordinators, and with John Morton taking over as offensive coordinator, fans are eager to learn more about the team’s new play-caller.

Though Morton may not be well known, he has a solid offensive background and appears well-prepared to maintain Detroit’s high-powered offense.

Earlier this week on The Pat McAfee Show, former Lions quarterback and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky explained why he believes Morton is a good fit for the role.

“I don’t know a ton about John Morton, but I trust Dan Campbell. He’s been in Detroit before, though we weren’t there at the same time. Losing Ben Johnson is a big deal—he’s one of the best play-callers and designers in the league. I like that Morton worked with Sean Payton, a brilliant offensive mind.

Many say Dan Campbell had a major influence on Detroit’s offensive play design and calling. As long as Campbell and Brad Holmes are leading, they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

The key players are still there, the offensive line remains one of the best, and they have plenty of strong pieces on the perimeter. I’m not saying they won’t miss a beat, since we need to see Morton as a play-caller and designer, but they still have everything needed for success.”

Morton was previously with the Lions in 2022 as a senior offensive assistant, and Campbell clearly trusts him. His quick promotion suggests the organization feels comfortable with him taking over.

Dan Campbell Confident in Detroit Lions’ Super Bowl Window

Regardless of who is calling plays, Orlovsky emphasized the importance of the Lions’ strong foundation. Campbell himself believes in the culture the team has built and sees their Super Bowl window staying open.

“We talk about that core—it’s still intact. We’ve re-signed some guys, and contract decisions are ongoing. But yes, we absolutely believe our window is open.

The key is having a strong culture, a clear identity, and players who fit that vision. We have that. We have talent at every crucial position, and those players are built the right way. So, yes, our window remains open.”

Morton’s job will be to sustain momentum for a top-10 offense, and with a talented roster in place, he has plenty to work with. With Campbell leading and Holmes supplying talent, Lions fans have good reason to trust the hire.
