Matthew Stafford remains a beloved figure in Detroit despite suiting up for the Los Angeles Rams the past few years. Whenever the Rams and Lions meet, it’s always a bit strange to see him line up against Jared Goff, the quarterback who came to Detroit in the trade. For Lions fans, though, the only thing that matters is their team pulling out the win.
This offseason has been anything but smooth for Stafford. A lingering injury sidelined him for much of training camp, preventing him from getting consistent reps with the team. Earlier this week, he finally returned to practice, though the process has been cautious. While Detroit fans don’t want to see him beat their team, many still pull for his success as a former cornerstone of the franchise.
On Tuesday, August 19, Rams head coach Sean McVay addressed Stafford’s progress following his second straight day on the field. With any quarterback, preseason setbacks can raise concerns about regular-season availability, and Stafford’s situation has been under close watch.
McVay Shares Encouraging News
After Stafford’s second session back on August 19, McVay provided a hopeful assessment. The quarterback had first returned the day prior, and McVay noted clear improvement in just 24 hours. According to the coach, Stafford’s ability to move within the pocket and execute under pressure was especially encouraging.
“I thought he looked better than yesterday,” McVay told reporters. “It’s definitely a step forward, and the goal now is to keep stacking good days.”
McVay added that Stafford seemed more comfortable as he re-immersed himself in team drills, calling his presence on the field “a positive sign” for the weeks ahead.
A Season-Defining Trend?
While McVay was careful not to overpromise, he acknowledged the trajectory looks good. “Back issues can be unpredictable,” he said, via ESPN’s Sarah Barshop, “but right now, everything points in the right direction.”
Stafford is currently playing on a short-term deal worth $8.4 million, with $8 million guaranteed, making 2025 potentially his last run with the Rams. For now, though, the priority is simply keeping him healthy and ready for Week 1.
No matter the uniform he wears, Stafford’s ties to Detroit ensure plenty of Lions fans continue to watch his journey closely—and many are rooting for him to finish strong.
