Matthew Stafford Unsure About Week 1 Start Amid Back Issues
Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is putting in the work as he prepares for what may be his final NFL season. However, the veteran has yet to confirm whether he’ll suit up for the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1.
Stafford has missed a significant portion of training camp due to a lingering back injury. Although he recently returned to practice and reportedly looked sharp, he declined to give a definitive answer about his availability for the season opener.
“I’m not answering questions like that,” Stafford said when asked directly, according to The Los Angeles Times.
His vague response has raised concerns that he might not be ready in time, leaving the Rams potentially needing to rely on backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to start the season.
Stafford Taking Recovery “One Day at a Time”
Rams head coach Sean McVay hasn’t offered much clarity either. Back in July, he described Stafford’s condition as “week-to-week.” Now, Stafford himself says things are progressing more gradually.
“It’s more of a day-to-day situation at this point,” Stafford explained. “I’m just doing everything I can to get back on the field each day.”
According to NFL.com’s Kevin Patra, the Rams have used some unconventional tools to aid Stafford’s recovery—including a special “restorative and rejuvenation” mobile unit parked at their training facility, which Stafford used during a missed practice.
Despite the uncertainty, Stafford offered some hopeful signs. He mentioned that his back has been feeling better and that he exceeded his own expectations during recent practice sessions.
“I actually felt pretty good out there,” Stafford said. “The last few practices, I was able to do more than I thought I’d be able to on Day 1. I’ve just been trying to build on each day. Backs can be unpredictable—it’s not always a clear timeline.”
Lions Moving Ahead with Jared Goff
Stafford was dealt to the Rams in a blockbuster trade that sent Jared Goff and several high-value draft picks to the Detroit Lions. The Lions have since used those picks to construct a competitive roster around Goff. After some early skepticism following his departure from L.A., Goff has solidified his status as Detroit’s franchise quarterback.
