Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell offered insight into why the team decided against making any roster moves at this year’s NFL trade deadline.

After standing pat while other teams made deals, Campbell faced questions on Wednesday about Detroit’s approach. He explained that while the team explored options—particularly along the offensive line, where injuries have taken a toll—nothing compelling enough came together.

“There just wasn’t anything that really stood out,” Campbell said. “Some situations were interesting, but not enough to make a move. We’re good. We’re ready to go.”

Rather than trading, the Lions focused on reinforcing their depth by signing three linemen to the practice squad: veterans Netane Muti and Chris Hubbard, along with rookie Jack Conley. Detroit also has faith in its internal depth, with Kayode Awosika, Trystan Colon, and practice squad players Kingsley Eguakun and Michael Niese available as reserves.

Campbell acknowledged that sometimes an available player might be slightly better than what they have, but the cost often outweighs the gain.

“Sure, maybe he’s a bit better,” Campbell said, “but when you weigh what you’d have to give up compared to what we already have ready to step in, it’s usually not worth it. We’re in a good spot. Not perfect, but good.”

Many fans have pushed for a more aggressive trade approach—using premium draft picks to chase elite talent and make a championship run. Given general manager Brad Holmes’ ties to Les Snead and the Rams’ famously aggressive “F— them picks” strategy, some expected similar boldness in Detroit. But Campbell made it clear that’s not the Lions’ philosophy right now.

“That kind of move costs a lot—draft picks, money, and sometimes long-term stability,” he said. “We’ve got players we want to keep and extend. Trading high picks for a one-year rental doesn’t fit what we’re building.”

Instead, Campbell is turning his focus inward, emphasizing preparation and confidence in the roster they already have.

“My job is to get these guys ready every Sunday,” Campbell said. “We’ve got depth, talent, weapons, and a quarterback. I just have to make sure we’re prepared in every way possible. I feel really good about where we are.”
