Former NFL running back Adrian Peterson, one of the league’s most accomplished players, was arrested over the weekend in Sugar Land, Texas, a suburb of Houston, on charges of driving while intoxicated (DWI) and unlawful carrying of a weapon, according to multiple reports.
Authorities confirmed that Peterson was taken into custody early Sunday morning after being pulled over for a traffic violation. Officers reportedly detected signs of intoxication, and after a field sobriety test, Peterson was arrested and transported to a local jail. In addition to the DWI charge, a firearm was allegedly discovered in his vehicle, leading to a second charge of unlawful possession.
This marks Peterson’s second DWI-related arrest in 2025, following an earlier incident in Minnesota earlier this year. The 39-year-old former MVP has not issued a public statement, and it remains unclear whether he has obtained legal representation.
Peterson’s career, while legendary on the field, has often been clouded by off-field controversies. A first-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2007, Peterson quickly became one of the most dominant running backs in NFL history. He earned seven Pro Bowl selections, four All-Pro honors, and won the NFL MVP award in 2012 after rushing for over 2,000 yards following a major knee injury.
After spending 10 seasons with the Vikings, Peterson’s career included short stints with several teams, including the New Orleans Saints, Washington Commanders, and notably, the Detroit Lions in 2020. During his single season in Detroit, Peterson provided valuable veteran leadership while rushing for 604 yards and seven touchdowns.
Despite his achievements, Peterson’s later years were marred by legal troubles and financial difficulties. He was suspended by the NFL in 2014 following a child abuse case and has faced multiple lawsuits related to unpaid debts.
The recent arrest adds another chapter to a career defined by both greatness and controversy. As of now, Peterson has not commented publicly on the situation, and court proceedings are pending.
Once celebrated as one of the greatest running backs in NFL history, Adrian Peterson’s post-football life continues to attract unwanted attention — a stark contrast to the disciplined, powerful runner fans once watched dominate Sundays.
