In the last two weeks, the NFL has been a whirlwind. Some players have been traded, while others have signed agreements with different clubs. In order to save money, the Detroit Lions have acquired two edge rushers, Payton Turner and D. J. Wonnum.
A former receiver chose to hang up his boots and retire from the NFL as the Lions attempted to improve their roster for the 2026 campaign. D. J. Chark, a receiver, announced his retirement from the NFL for good on his Instagram account on March 20.
D. J. Chark, a former Lions wide receiver, has left the NFL.
I have decided to share a proper farewell as I navigate retirement after giving it a lot thought, Chark wrote in his blog. Every organization I’ve had the honor of playing for, all my teammates, and all my supporters are appreciated.
Even though Chark only played one season with the Lions in 2022, he was a major threat in that offense. Even though he was sidelined for six games due to a grade 2 ankle sprain, Chark made his presence known the moment he stepped onto the field. The LSU graduate, who had 30 receptions and three touchdowns, was third on the team in receiving yards (502) over 11 games.
As he averaged 16. 7 yards per catch, he provided the Lions’ offense a field stretcher. Since Jameson Williams only participated in six games while recovering from a torn ACL he sustained during the College Football Playoff National Championship game on January 10, 2022, that was sorely needed.
Tom Kennedy, on the other hand, was another downfield threat, but he only appeared in seven games, catching eight passes for 141 yards (17. 6 yards per catch). Chark, who played just one season with the Lions, was their greatest choice for breaking the defense and showed that he could catch passes well.
Chark played for the Carolina Panthers in 2023 and the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024, then sat out last season after his time with the Lions. Chark’s best days in the NFL were with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Lions, and he didn’t create much of a stir as his career came to a close.
The best wishes from Lions fans go out to him as he begins this next chapter of his life. He aided Detroit in changing under Dan Campbell by providing them with a powerful deep threat. The Lions went 9-8 during that 2022 season, serving as a springboard for their revival.
Chark performed well in 2022 when wearing the Honolulu Blue, with a pair of Amon-Ra St. Brown and Williams currently spearheading the attack
